It is Christmas week, so maybe I will try and think generous thoughts…
People are good at all sorts of things, but we don't want everyone to be good at just one thing, nor do we think that anyone should have to be good at everything. But, generally speaking, most people would wish others well, just as they wish themselves well. And only the few want others to do poorly while they themselves are swimming in great wealth.
Imagine a fisherman who nets enough fish to feed everyone on earth for all time, and that the fish will never run out. There are financial fishers who catch such fish. They are the innovators, entrepreneurs, and leaders who have made a significant impact on the world. They are the ones who have created jobs, products, and services that have improved the lives of millions.
A universal, basic income, call it Universal Basic Income (UBI), can be thusly funded, and, even while there will be misused funds, there will certainly be a reduction in stress, crime, even pollution…as people can now delegate more time to cleaning up the world around them. UBI is a concept where every citizen receives a regular, unconditional sum of money from the government to cover their basic needs. It's a safety net that ensures no one falls below the poverty line.
Lifting the burdens can take the form of food and rent credits, as well as other helpful watchamacallits (I couldn't resist!). When building back better, we mustn't neglect human software in favor of inhuman hardware. We need to focus on the well-being of people, not just the economy. We need to invest in education, healthcare, and social services that help people thrive.
People should not be forced into a life of crime, simply because the world has become too expensive to get by on nothing. No one should have to choose between paying rent or buying food. No one should have to live on the streets because they can't afford a home. No one should have to go without healthcare because they can't afford it.
As I walked through the city streets, I saw the contrast between wealth and poverty. I saw the luxurious skyscrapers and the homeless shelters. I saw the fancy cars and the people begging for change. And I thought, "This doesn't have to be this way."
We have the resources, the technology, and the knowledge to create a better world. We can create a world where everyone has enough. Where everyone has access to quality education, healthcare, and social services. Where everyone can pursue their passions and contribute to society in meaningful ways.
It's Christmas week, and I'm filled with hope. Hope that we can create a world that is more just, more equitable, and more compassionate. Hope that we can recognize the inherent worth and dignity of every human being. Hope that we can work together to build a world that is better for all.
As I looked up at the stars, I remembered the words of a wise man: "We are all in this together. We are all human beings, deserving of respect, kindness, and compassion. Let us strive to create a world that reflects these values."
And so, I wish you a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year. May your heart be filled with joy, love, and generosity. May we all work together to create a world that is better for all.
Realities of the past are showing obsolescence. It's up to us to create our future. With derangement & chaos in our world, we need to tap into peace & wisdom, bring shared visions to life. We can (we must) create a new way of being, reflecting the reality of our shared visions.
Well said, David.
